Not good. Prayers and well-wishes.

This taxpaying, voting “Purple Republican” civilian has tremendous respect for John McCain, even when disagreeing (by degrees) with certain political positions. Even voted for him in 2008.

Part of me finds this tragic situation a bit ironic, given the current debate on healthcare.

Preamble to the U.S. Constitution (the “mission statement”): “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

A Federalist Democratic-Republican form of government. “Government of the People, by the People, and for the People”.

“Founding Values” are conceived as a fusion of Christianity and “Age of Reason” Secularism and Science. In my view, for example, “innocent until proven guilty” is born of that fusion. Christian sense of Justice and Compassion, the responsibility and accountability for the government doing the prosecution to follow the due process demanded by “Rule of Law, not of Men” thinking, as well as a scientific bent of proving in a disciplined and as objective a manner as possible what the facts in evidence are.

I’m a blue collar guy. I may have it wrong.

I’m a Moderate/Centrist Republican. I may want to get budgets and deficits under control, but not on the backs of the poor or elderly or disabled. (My Christian/Secular Science proclivities poking thru.) Providing universal access to affordable, quality healthcare to all within our borders is important to me, as is keeping the costs under control, while providing conditions for the advancement of science and medicine.

So, how do we do that under our Federalist Democratic-Republican system, what kind of mix of market forces and checks and balances do we need to manage the resources to provide the conditions for progress?
