Well,…. FX’ season premiere of AHS has been weirder than usual*. *(good thing) EDIT: Question: Why aren’t clown allowed to be goofy or funny anymore? (….. Really hope WizKids can some day make a HeroClix set based on Kurt Busiek’s ‘Astro City’. Could use the clown-themed hero Jack-in-the-Box….) EDIT II: “HONC”! Hilarious! Short version: finally got to see “War for the Planet of the Apes” last Saturday. LOVED IT. Long version: ….. [BRB] EDIT (2017-08-06): Well, I wasn’t back right away. Sorry. So, the week of July 14th, the week WPA [War for the Planet of the Apes] was to open, was telling the girlfriend I hoped she would see it with me. So, we used her On Demand service to watch the first of this series, 2011’s “Rise of the Planet […]

The preview for the “Blade Runner 2049” is the only one I remember from the slew previews — like 25 minutes worth — they played before the matinee of “Wonder Woman” I saw last weekend. I hope it’s good.

Movie: Wonder Woman. IMO: Thumbs up. (Caveat: I’m biased in favor of such movies.) Keep in mind I’m more of a ‘Marvel Guy’. I put DC’s WW movie up there with the Captain America/Avengers movies I love. After the Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Suicide Squad movies…. Maybe this should be the official ‘starting point’? For the DCCU? [Space reserved for additional future comments.]

Wonder Woman. Out in theaters this weekend. Sounds like it’ll be fun, better than previous, recent DC Comics’ superhero movies. Hope to make time to see it this weekend. I love Rocket Raccoon. Have, still, in my dwindling comic book collection, the 4-issue limited series from the 1980’s. I keep wondering if there’s room in Marvel Studio’s schedule for R.R. to get a ‘stand-alone’ movie, his own ‘origin story’ movie? More like, he and Groot (or maybe without Groot?) take a break away from the Guatdians, with Rocket secretly following a lead about who he is and where he came from because he’s fonally curious enough and has a […]

Saturday (2017-05-06), took my two nephews to a 10:45am matinee of “Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2”. I liked it, but I’m biased. With a lot of superhero genre movies being “origin stories”, Volume 2 concludes Star-Lord’s origin story. The movie raised some questions for me, especially the differences in the concept of “Celestials” between the comic books and the ‘cinematic universe’. I usually avoid spoilers, including posting them here, but i wanted to see what someone else thought, so….. […]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Cauldron_(film) For whatever reason, looking online at those mock-1980’s tee shirts made me think of this 80’s Disney animated movie. It wasn’t very good, but there were some cool ‘nuggets’. For whatever reason, it also made me think of the Disney movie “BRAVE” and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s also bringing to mind the arcade game “Dragon’s Lair”, and, again, for whatever reason, the sci-fi/horror movie, “The Cube”. Just wondering if Disney could re/make an exciting, creepy/scary, 3D […]

I’m glad the marketplace and product has evolved the way it has. Hope “House of Ideas” doesn’t backslide. FYI: I stopped buying individual issues of comics over a decade ago, I rarely buy a physical trade paperback collection of comics anymore, and I’ve only bought a ‘handful’ of […]
This week at work, we’re still busy, with plenty of projects still underway, plenty coming down the pike. But, we do seem to be in a slight “lull”. So, I took today (a Friday and a payday) as a vacation day. Got my driver’s license renewed first thing, the bummed around for a bit, then headed to an 11:30am matinee of “KONG: Skull Island”. I feel a bit guilty, as i didn’t let my parents or grandmother know i had […]
Just saw “Ghost in the Shell”. I liked it. But, I’m biased. Like a lot of sci-fi, plays with concepts of identity, humanity, meaning. Wrapped in a crunchy shell. I avoided all spoilers. I barely remember seeing an anime movie of the story, late 1990’s. Time now to read-up on the story of the story. EDIT (2017-04-07): Wow, GitS has seen a lot of anime iterations since 1994. Sidebar: I still haven’t read any reviews of this 2017 version, but […]

Watching “The Walking Dead” now. The mid-season premiere starts in less than 10 minutes. Have to say I “love to hate” Negan. JDM’s portrayal really nails the character’s use of humor as a weapon. For some reason, it makes me want to see that Robert Duvall movie, “The Great Santini”.

PBS/NOVA: “Search for the Super-Battery” Really looking forward to this tonight. Need to check the schedule, see if it conflicts with FX’s “LEGION”. I think/feel like I need to either cut the cable entirely, or invest in a DVR. Well, missing the opening weekend of “Hidden Figures”. But, next weekend is a payday weekend, so next Saturday after work, that’s what I’ll be doing. This weekend? Work yesterday, staying in from the cold and watching my “The Martian” Extended Edition today. EDIT (2017-01-15): Well, another Sunday evening. Busy day for Gramma, what with the friend’s birthday party, a slew of senior activities, i just took her for a walk (she’s not out of that wheelchair enough, needs all the exercise […]
Finally! Hit the Cobblestone for an 11:30am matinee of “ARRIVAL”. “Hard sci-fi.” Not an explosive action/fantasy flick; more cerebral thriller. Every bit as good as I’d heard. Ultimately a positive movie, not necessarily “uplifting”, but hopeful of the future. One to add to the collection when it hits DVD.
Was up until passed 2am over the election. Trump pulled a “W”. I turned off the radio before Trump’s victory speech. Apparently, Trump said in his speech he would be president to everyone, was offering everyone a chance to get on board now. I’m detecting an NYC-style “…or else” in there. Comparisons between our “Pax Americana” and the long-fallen Roman Empire come in and out of fashion. My $0.02: by voting for John Kasich during the primary, then for Hillary […]
Imaginary Worlds: “Economics of Thrones and Starships” Just catching up with IW podcasts. This one stood out for me. Why? Captain America, “The Walking Dead”, and “Seven Samurai”. Was thinking last weekend, while mowing the lawn (a tedious, futile waste of time and energy; other people find joy/satisfaction in this form of work,I don’t), using the other 3/4 of my mind not involved in the task, to play with a nerdy fanboy question: “Which 3 of the warriors of Akira Kurosawa’s […]

Hillary Clinton says she believes in science. Donald Trump isn’t a “great believer” in human-caused climate change. But that doesn’t mean that Trump hates all science or that Clinton would always make the same choices as a lab technician. Saw the 5:30pm showing of “Suicide Squad”. Short answer: I liked it. Way, way more fun than “Batman v. Superman”. Caveat: I’m very forgiving of superhero genre movies. More comments later, maybe tomorrow. EDIT I: As with “Man of Steel” and BvS, I end up liking the actors, really like certain “moments” (“character beats”), and certain scenes or exchanges of dialog between characters, and become really forgiving of some definite…. “choppiness”?…. of these movies overall. For example, “best superhero movie […]

I loved that Nextwave run. Although that’s not the “*real*” Devil Dinosaur, it was a fun version of the character, and is now on my “Must Have” list. Hope I pull him from one of the two cases I reserved of the Marvel HeroClix SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN set. EDIT (2016-07-30): For comparison, the “older model”… For ‘future reference’ —

Stumbled into this: Marvel’s new “Iron Man” is a black woman named Riri Williams! Very cool. Looking forward to this, to the character becoming a mainstay of the narrative universe. Meanwhile, finally found this: BleedingCool’s review of “Steve Rogers * Captain America” #2, talking about “HYDRA-Cap”. Okay, so, it does involve time-bending antics. Good. Was very afraid Marvel was trying a full-on Ret-Con, destroying a great fictional character with a dumb stunt. *whew* Looking at my options to ‘get back […]

Can’t believe fanboy’s love this whacko so much. His symbiote is more interesting that its ‘host’ [Cletus Kasady]. Venom is more interesting than Carnage. I’ve never liked Venom. Hoping to get out to see the movie “RACE” next weekend. Jesse Owens’ story also inspired DC Comics to create a superher back in the 1980’s for thier “All-Star Squadron” comic, set during WWII: Amazing-Man! Would like to see him clixed, both with his original “Absorbing Man”-like powers and his later telekinesis powers.
