Ret-Con: Gorilla Grodd (HT) (v1.1)

DC HT Gorilla GroddHomemade Ret-Con Trait: “Telekinetic Bolts and Mental Illusions” If this character is the only one on your force with this name and set symbol, it may use Energy Shield/Deflection, Sidestep, and Force Blast.

Once again I must say: I’m more of a Marvel guy than a DC Comics guy. But, I like seeing heroes square off against “good” (conceptually) supervillains than against other superheroes. And DC hero The Flash has one of the best “Rogues Galleries” out there. I’ve only caught 5 episodes of the CW TV series “The Flash”, but 2 have provided glimpses of one of my favorite villains, Gorilla Grodd.

Many versions of this character in the game of HeroClix now, with the most recent interpretation hitting the map in 2014’s THE FLASH set.

The RCT above is meant to help out the aging HYPERTIME piece in defense and mobility.

SIDENOTE: Once again (this coming after a post about how I’m diving into ” monthly ‘sustainable’ charitable donations” again), I think WizKids is missing the opportunity for a modestly-priced ($2-$4/mo.) subscription service for “eTools” for HeroClix. It’s become very difficult to keeep up with both changes in the game and with figures/character released for the game. I’m still of a mind that such a service can help on both fronts.

Have also suggested that such a service could allow WizKids Game Design to release “eCharacter Cards” for figures already in the game, whether it’s for older, “pre-character card era” pieces like the rendition of Gorilla Grodd above, or for tweaking or errating cards for characters in the current era. Specifically, have mentioned the opportunity of adding free “Ret-Con Traits” to older characters, to help them retain “play value”. I believe I also suggested “Character Feats”, a spin on the old Feat card concept; a Feat effect that costs points like a Feat card, but can only be used by the character whose card it’s printed on, completely optional, and appropriate to the character.

YMMV.

DC Comics HeroClix “ReClix” Wish-List & Ret-Con (HYPERTIME, 2002 & JUSTICE LEAGUE, 2007): Plastic Man (various versions; v5.6)

EDIT (2015-02-16): Revising and reposting a homemade “Ret-Con Trait” ability for ye olde DC HeroClix HYPERTIME  set (2002) Plastic Man, a “Rookie/Experienced/Veteran” interpretation.  [Original post was 2011-06-24.] Also, going to include in this revision the only other two versions of Plastic Man we have in clix-form [so far], with some “Ret-Con Traits” that I hope are fun. I will not spend a lot of time with “commentary”.

HT Plastic Man Stat Tower

For the old HYPERTIME REV, the homemade “Ret-Con Trait” is: Minion: “Hey, I’ve been legit for a while now!” If this character is the only one on your force with this name and set symbol, it may use the following abilities: If another friendly character with the JLA or Batman Ally team ability is within 8 squares, Plastic Man can use Sidestep and Combat Reflexes. If there are at least two such characters, Plastic Man can also use Energy Shield/Deflection. If there are at least one of each such characters adjacent to Plastic Man, Plastic Man possesses Empower.

This old version hopefully becomes more valuable to the team, even if he’s still mostly a “Pawn” (tie-up, line-of-fire blocker, Mastermind fodder). The Empower can be fun, and there are a lot of cheap-ish JLA team ability characters, including “taxis”, and particularly from older sets, that you could probably et a small squad of expendable “swarmers” to zip in and lock down one opposing character while your “bigger guns” focus on someone else. [Thinking: 400-point and higher games.]

CJ223 Plastic Man

For the old COSMIC JUSTICE Limited Edition piece, the homemade “Ret-Con Trait”: “On the Q.T.” When placing characters at the beginning of the game, Plastic Man can be placed up to his speed value away from his starting area.

JL030 Plastic Man

This JUSTICE LEAGUE rendition isn’t too bad. It’s “aging well”. Still, bit of a “buff” may be in order for these times. Homemade “Ret-Con Trait”: Minion: “‘Eel’ O’Brian” If this character is the only one on your force named Plastic Man, it may use the following abilities: If another friendly character with the Batman Ally team ability is within 8 squares, Plastic Man can use Sidestep and Combat Reflexes. If another friendly character with the JLA team ability is within 8 squares, Plastic Man can also use Energy Shield/Deflection. If there are at least one of each such characters, Plastic Man also modifies his attack value by +1.

This version is “more robust” than any of the HT versions, and still has plenty going for him in today’s Golden Age.

WISH-LIST: Just hoping for a more-modern interpretation. Some other “elastic character” have had some neat powers. Would like to see a Trait ability with “size-changing”, shifting between Tiny, “normal”, and Giant damage symbols, maybe? Traited Barrier at a locked range might be cool as well (similar to a previous version of Mr. Fantastic).

EDIT: I wonder what could be done with the “Morph” style mechanics? It’d also be nice (looking at that “mailbox” LE) to have a version that starts out as a special object? Can get used as an object until he’s used to hit some opposing team character? Hmmm. Not sure how to work it… Scooping up a pic from the internet, I guess I’m going for some sort of “ambush” kinda thing. See below.

And now, a scene from Cartoon Network’s BATMAN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD cartoon series (2008 to 2011) —

(Plastic Man and Batman in the Bat-Plane)

PLASTIC MAN: Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Because I’m seeing gorillas riding pterodactyls, with harpoon guns, stealing a boat.

BATMAN:  It’s Gorilla Grodd.

PLASTIC MAN: It’s messed up is what it is!
